The website is fixed Posted by karmann Mar 11, 2005, 05:11PM |
The website is fixed. The clan matches page will generate properly again. The news is being pulled from phpBB2 now instead of failing on yabbse. Some links were removed and things were cleaned up a little.
Enjoy.

Censorship Posted by karmann Aug 17, 2004, 03:09PM |
Some of you might have noticed that BurnHavoc has mentioned that he frequents a messageboard devoted to the game Serious Sam. Well a while back he invited me to reply to one of the many political threads that they started. This because he knew I'd be a solid counter to the idiotic right-wingers that frequently post there. These people not only dominate the discussion but try to intimidate those with opposing views by reporting them to the admins. Liberals are accused of ganging up on people, trolling and attacking people but conservatives can do all the above with no consequences.
Needless to say, it took me about 2 posts to get a threatening PM from an idiotic board regular nicknamed Lupo about how I'd better watch my step or he'd "have my ass" and that I didn't have the balls to go after him. Ignoring the homo-erotic nature of his threat, I found it really amazing how people have the mistaken assumption that because I'm a liberal, I'm a pussy. I spent the next few weeks making the right-wingers look reactionary and foolish while playing their little game. I somehow managed to not get banned but got quickly bored with it. The only challenge was keeping up with the sheer volume of posts, not the content.
That board is a right-wing circle-jerk with Ann Coulter as the rhetorical icon.
Anyway, I hadn't posted in a few months when I noticed this thread and dove right in. Read the whole thing for a perfect example of how the board works and the idiocy that's passed as intelligence. Pay particular attention to the head-nodding, back-patting group-think on the right and how we left-wingers aren't allowed to "gang up" on anyone. There's so much more to say about the lies and distortions passed off as fact by these nitwits but who has the time.
Yea, I got banned for that. FOR THAT! Pretty funny huh? Some guy calls me a "KKK advocate" and I get banned. Whatever. There are plenty of uncensored boards on the net where I can make right-wingers look stupid, I don't need that one.

Our servers, The Server Spy and other business Posted by karmann Apr 13, 2004, 07:20PM |
Our DoD servers are gone. No more! I was working on NY3 and accidentally deleted some HL files on NY1. Oops. I'm too lazy to fix it so they're gone. It was a long run and I hope everyone enjoyed the servers. But they won't be coming back.
The only reason they lasted this long was that I needed a test server for any changes I'd make to The Server Spy. I've been planning to make this change for a while now as well, but effective immediately The Server Spy is now freeware. I'll be uploading a patch in a few days that disables the key checking and enables all the features. I'd like to give my sincerest thanks to those that registered, used and recommended my software over the last two years. It wasn't a lot of money but it certainly was enough to help my bottom line. Especially when my wife was being a full-time mommy. THANK YOU!
If I ever add support to another exceptionally popular game then I might go to a subscription based model where I'll monitor your servers from here and charge a monthly fee. Current Server Spy registered users could use this service for free of course. There are no plans for this right now. I just wanted to give you registered users some notice that if I start charging for something new in the future that your current lifetime registration will remain valid.
That brings us to what's next for the goonsquad.net servers and The Goon Squad itself. I'm going to try to setup a Battlefield Vietnam server on NY1 and a FarCry server on NY3. Both games are amazing and deserving of our attention. The current members of The Goon Squad are not all that interested in competing again so I'm considering going in another direction.
What I'm thinking about doing is sponsoring other clans to compete using our servers. With a long-term goal of getting real sponsorship for the squads including hardware and travel to competitions. Of course to do this these squads would have to be real pros and not a bunch of friends that think they're uber. More on this later as I discuss things with the current members of the clan.

Server Spy issue Posted by karmann May 05, 2003, 09:27AM |
I'm aware of the issues with The Server Spy and the latest HLDS (x.1.1.1). Apparently the new code to prevent exploiting the server status requests also prevents remote applications like mine from sending too many commands to the server via remote rcon. The following lines in your server config should fix the problem. I'm testing this right now and will post here if this does not fix it.

// Allow for more remote commands<br />max_queries_sec 5<br />max_queries_sec_global 30<br />max_queries_window 30 |

Time for a small update Posted by karmann Apr 23, 2003, 02:50PM |
(gs) is still inactive but some of us got into the Planetside beta (exclusive and open) and have been playing that together. We plan to play it after release and will start recruiting then.
The Server Spy was put on hold to wait for CS 1.6 which was never released. Rest assured that once it's released I'll have a patched version ready in a few days.
I also hope to add support for Half-Life 2 whenever it's released. I'm assuming Valve's awesome client and server mod support will be included in this product as well.

GO BUCKEYES!!! Posted by karmann Jan 04, 2003, 01:01AM |
OMFG! What a game that was! I honestly didn't think they'd win. That could have something to do with how jaded being a Bengals fan has made me. :-\
Congratulations OSU!

Tisk tisk tisk Posted by karmann Jan 02, 2003, 02:46PM |
Every so often I do a little web searching for things related to Goon Squad. Mostly this is to protect my rights with regard to the clan name, software names, make sure nobody is posting keys for The Server Spy, ripping off our site layout, etc. Sometimes I find some pretty interesting things. Like when I found some websites that blatently ripped off this site's layout. For example:
http://hot.ee/rusm/
and (from the Google cache since this guy has since taken his site down to change it for me)...
http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:ZSsJ4ecQg_QC:www.warrig.nl/+%22Boring+HTML+done%22&hl=en&start=4&ie=UTF-8
Note the "Boring HTML..." stuff at the bottom. That's my line dammit. They even had the nerve to put their own names on it like they did it themselves!
Anyway, I found those a few months ago. This morning I decided to do the other thing I usually do which is to check our stats pages and see who our top referrers are. For those that don't know a referrer is a site that sends someone to us. This is usually because of a link on their page. For example our top referrer for a long time was the DoD website. We had a link on their front page that gave us a ton of hits. Today's review of December wasn't quite so clear. Suddenly we have thousands of hits from sites I've never heard of before. Like CS sites in Taiwan. A little research discovered dozens of pages like these...
http://www.dmk.idv.tw/dmkserver.htm http://www.gamefile.net/server/server_info.asp?serID=394
Sites that were so kind as to link to my server status CGI script and not tell me. Which (of course) taxes our web server CPU and pulls over the little map picture as well. Not cool. The options... take it offline for them, ban their websites from accessing it, or add a little advertisement for our site. I chose the latter. If you jerk website coders don't like it then feel free to take the links off your pages.
For the record, the code I use to generate the server status pages is based off a free CGI script called QSMon. I've zipped up and given out my HEAVILY modified versions to at least a half dozen people so they could use it on their own sites. They were nice enough to ask me. For those that stole from us (yes it is stealing) don't bother asking. Too late.

The next version of The Server Spy Posted by karmann Jan 01, 2003, 09:32AM |
What can I say about it? I'm slow and at this point there's no excuse for it. Anyway, I plan to work on it the next week or so and hope to get it out shortly thereafter. It -should- include Firearms and Natural Selection support. I just need someone to seen me some detailed NS logs. If anyone here runs a NS server and could zip up a couple dozen logs (with mp_logdetail set to 2) that'd be very helpful. Thanks.
It will include all the current DoD weapons and will reconnect quickly after someone uses HLSW. The one thing that won't be improved and I've basically given up on if better flood control on the IRC bot.

It's that time of year again. Time to leave the south behind for a week and drive my family around on the annual Western Ohio Tour. I won't bore you with the details. Suffice to say we see most all the family on Christmas day. :P
I'd just like to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas!

I know, I know... Posted by karmann Dec 20, 2002, 04:50PM |
It's probably getting pretty annoying for those of you that come here frequently to have me resetting the poll on the right all the time. Well at first it was the PollIt version, then it was a PHP/YabbSE version and I finally fixed the latter version to allow you to respond right here from the main page if you haven't voted. So respond. 8)
The clan matches page is now generated from MySQL data. I think it turned out nicely. It also pointed out some math errors in our win percentages. It turns out we're better than we thought. :P That should be it for the site changes for the time being.
